Telstra stops implementation of bill payment fee
Article Date: 04/11/2009

TELSTRA has listened to its consumers and will stopped penalizing those who pay for their bills by mail or over the counter with a $2.20 bill payment administration fee.
The added fee was implemented on September 14 this year.
According to the company’s CEO David Thodey, the billing change will take effect in the next few months. Then, Telstra would automatically return all of the payment administration fees that customers have paid from the time the new fee was introduced on September 14.
Mr. Thodey admitted that imposing the bills payment administration fee was not in line with Telstra’s commitment to put its customers at the core of its business. He added that it has become clear that imposing the fee was not the right way to encourage Telstra customers to pay through electronic means.
Mr Thodey said that the company was still looking for other means to encourage its customers to favor using electronic payments. He said that it is possible that Telstra would introduce an electronic-only alternative plan.
The Council on the Aging, a leading senior citizens’ organisation approved Telstra’s action, because the fee showed prejudice against older persons who usually do not own a computer or surf the internet.
